Across North Carolina thousands of homeless families struggle to find safe, decent and affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is a housing program operating in over 95 countries across the globe. The program builds and repairs homes on a non-profit basis.
It’s important to note that these homes are not “given” to the home owners. Potential Habitat for Humanity homeowners must have sufficient credit and rental history to qualify for a Home mortgage.
In addition to qualifying for the loan the future homeowner must also contribute labor or “sweat equity” during the construction process.
Habitat for Humanity’s success is attained through a labor force consisting of volunteers, donations and physical materials.
The concept was created in 1942 by Clarence Jordan. Jordan shared the concept with two friends, Linda and Millard Fuller whom later founded Habitat for Humanity in 1976.

- Its estimated that the world slum population by 2020 will be 1 billion people
